      Tristan Rigby: Editor's Note

We hope you will find the Rishigallery website an illuminating resource. The profusion of Buddhist deities, bodhisattvas, Buddhas & dakinis accoutered with a wide array of attributes can be to say the least confusing. As part of an on ongoing commitment, this website will explore the tantric symbolism & intends to clarify the significances behind the Buddhist Art. We will reply to all posted questions & welcome Kapalasuggestions to make all our featured text more relevent, together with ways to improve our service.
The paintings displayed are of course religiously inspired. These images represent reified spiritual energy. With regard to the art found on this website, deference should be given to the Tantric Mahasiddas & the peoples in the lands of Nepal, Tibet, Mongolia & Bhutan whose faith these paintings illuminate. These countries have, by way of their spiritual comportment, preserved, maintained & developed the ideas which underly this artform.

A sequence of peculiar events in my personal life led me to Kathmandu, Nepal in the Autumn of 2008. Like most visitors I wandered into some of the Thamel quarter's notorious Thankga Painting shop-cum-galleries. At the door of the first I happened upon, I was welcomed with a warbled "Cup of Chai, Sirr", by a diminutive though sprightly Nepalese gentleman called 'Maddan'. Deft of tongue, nimble in attentiveness he was keen to lay before, in between my sips of tea, the strangest & most mystifying paintings I had ever set eyes on. Such beguiling imagery. At one moment beautiful, at another bizarre, though undeniably intriguing. I quipped "Why is this one green & that blue?". "Oh that's Green Tara, and the blue one Medcine Boodarr". His flickering eye & sympathic smile all added to the other-worldliness. He must have appreciated my enthusiasm, or else a quick bit of business. The was followed by dozens of visits to Maddan's shop & I owe him much for his kindling my interest in Buddhist Art.

      Kevin Rigby: Editor's Father

My father Kevin, was a man of extremes. Just as the great Prince Siddhatha Gautam Buddha, Kanishka & countless others who realised the illusion and often false promises presented by Society. I last saw him when I was five years old in his hippie habit, with long wisps of hair which freely cascaded down his purple cloak. He was always enigmatic & would touch the lives of many people in life and in death. Kapala During the late sixties he was one of the early pioneers who, along with his best friend Sean Jones, travelled overland to India, largely living on their wits, bent on seeking out the the mysteries of the east. In 1973, under the benevolence & stewardship of his esteemed friend Sean, he joined a Gelug Buddhist Monestary living in Macleod Gange, Dharamsala, India. There he studied & practiced Buddhism, illustrating some of the Glen Mullein's early translations of important Tibetan texts which had been smuggled out of Chinese occupied Tibet. These short texts contributed in no small way to the beginnings of the Dalai Lama's newly founded Tibetan Library of Works & Archives. After five years, he handed in his Robes returning to his mystic ways. Sadly he was assasinated in Swat in 1979 by a henchman of the ruling warlord. I knew nothing of my father from the age of five and only by a series of extraordinary circumtances, came to discover my father's fate. Kevin was until recently buried under an Amloch tree in a paddock beside the Swat River at the House he helped to build & with the inimicable Sean Jones in Qamarlandi, Swat.
